The Faculty of Pharmacy was established in 1926 at the University of Warsaw and was the first independent center of academic pharmaceutical education in Poland. A four-year degree program was introduced in the newly established Faculty.
The outbreak of World War II interrupted the scientific and didactic activities of the Faculty. The secret teaching of pharmacy students began as early as the fall of 1939 and went through various organizational forms, from single classes to the creation of the secret Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Warsaw.
In the post-war period classes began in 1945 in rooms lent by the Veterinary Institute on Grochowska Street.
Nearly 1,000 graduates of the Faculty of Pharmacy UW have received their diplomas.
The late 1940s were a time of heated debate over the future shape of pharmacy studies. Progressive educational circles demanded that four-year pharmacy studies with a nationally unified program should end with a master's thesis. It has also been suggested that the studies program needs to be directed by separating several specializations within the fourth year.
In 1950 Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy were separated from the structure of Universities to form independent Medical Academies.
Thus, the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Warsaw was transformed into the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Medical Academy in Warsaw, which name was changed a few months later into the Medical Academy subordinated to the Ministry of Health. After the incorporation of the Faculty of Pharmacy into the structure of the Academy, a five-year program of pharmaceutical studies ending with a master's thesis was introduced.
In the second half of 1970, after 25 years of post-war crowding in buildings scattered all over the city, the first two pavilions of a new building in Pole Mokotowskie, at the junction of Żwirki i Wigury and Banacha Streets, were handed over to the Faculty of Pharmacy.
In 2001, the Faculty Council passed a resolution to establish a Pharmaceutical Postgraduate Training Center. With the beginning of the academic year 2002/2003, the academic year began for students of the newly created field of study - medical analytics. In addition, part-time studies in pharmacy have been launched.
Throughout its rich history, the Faculty has achieved numerous successes in science and education. Among the largest are the development and introduction of new, original drugs into treatment: Binazin and Bicordin, as well as the development of a number of new methods in drug synthesis and quality control, laboratory diagnostics and biotechnology.
